Are any among you sick? They should call for the elders of the church and have them pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord. The prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise them up; and anyone who has committed sins will be forgiven.

Anointing of the Sick

Illness and suffering have always been among the gravest problems confronted in human life. In illness, man experiences his powerlessness, his limitations, and his finitude. Every illness can make us glimpse death.

Illness can lead to anguish, self-absorption, sometimes even despair and revolt against God. It can also make a person more mature, helping him discern in his life what is not essential so that he can turn toward that which is. Very often illness provokes a search for God and a return to him.

Anointing of the Sick is a sacrament of healing.  Those who are elderly or seriously ill can receive healing through anointing, celebrated by a priest or a bishop.

The anointing of the sick can be celebrated during Mass, at hospital or nursing homes, or in a person’s home.

Anointing of the sick is different from the Last Rites or Extreme Unction (final anointing). The latter is normally administered shortly before the death of a person.

Receiving Anointing of the Sick

Anointing of the Sick is a sacrament for those whose are unwell or experiencing ill health. The sacrament enables the sick or aged person to be anointed with the Oil of the Sick, to experience the healing and strength of Jesus Christ and to be supported by a praying community.

When and where do we celebrate Anointing of the Sick?
The sacrament may be celebrated during Mass, or at a hospital or nursing home, or in a person’s home. It is a celebration where members of the Church community offer the support of faith and prayer to those who are sick.

The sacrament is celebrated with adults who are sick or unwell. It can also be celebrated with sick children if they have sufficient understanding. The sacrament is not administered to anyone who has already died. Prayers for the Dead are prayed for the deceased.

People who are sick and families and friends are encouraged to contact their parish priest and can ask for the sacrament at the onset, or during serious illness. Parish communities also offer opportunities for the Anointing of the Sick several times during the year. These gatherings are an opportunity to experience the support of the community.
