Sacraments
The sacraments of Christian initiation – Baptism, Confirmation, and the Eucharist – lay the foundations of every Christian life. “The sharing in the divine nature given to men through the grace of Christ bears a certain likeness to the origin, development, and nourishing of natural life. the faithful are born anew by Baptism, strengthened by the sacrament of Confirmation, and receive in the Eucharist the food of eternal life. By means of these sacraments of Christian initiation, they thus receive in increasing measure the treasures of the divine life and advance toward the perfection of charity.
– Catechism of the Catholic Church 1212
Mother of Mercy and St Agatha’s Parish follow the Sacramental Policy of the Archdiocese of Brisbane. Generally, children will receive the sacraments according to the following program:
Year 3 – Children are sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit in the Sacrament of Confirmation.
Year 4 – Children are welcomed to the Lord’s Table and receive Holy Communion for the first time.
Year 5 – Children are prepared to celebrate the Sacrament of Penance with individual confession and absolution.
Teenagers and adults are also welcome to prepare to receive the sacraments. Please see our RCIA page for further information.
For ethical and legal reasons, The Archdiocese of Brisbane requires both parents (legal guardians) to provide consent for childhood Sacraments. Please attach relevant court orders if there is only one parent signatory. Please call the parish if you have any questions.
Enrolment
In keeping with the Sacramental Policy of the Archdiocese of Brisbane, our Sacramental Program is parish-based, family-centred and school-supported. The preparation requires commitment from you and your family to attend activities that we offer, and upon your enrolment, we have clear expectations that you will participate fully in the program.
According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, parents have the first responsibility for the education of their children. Parents must regard their children as children of God and respect them as human persons. Showing themselves obedient to the will of the Father in heaven, they educate their children to fulfill God’s law. Family catechesis precedes, accompanies, and enriches other forms of instruction in the faith. Parents have the mission of teaching their children to pray and to discover their vocation as children of God. The parish is the Eucharistic community and the heart of the liturgical life of Christian families; it is a privileged place for the catechesis of children and parents.
Children will not “graduate” upon receiving Confirmation and First Holy Communion, rather, it will mark their official welcome as a full participant into the Catholic Church and their parish community. After receiving First Holy Communion, children will regularly receive the Eucharist at mass.
