In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, so that where I am, there you may be also.
John 14:2-3

Funerals
All the sacraments, and principally those of Christian initiation, have as their goal the last Passover of the child of God which, through death, leads him into the life of the Kingdom. Then what he confessed in faith and hope will be fulfilled: “I look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come.”
Catechism of the Catholic Church 1680
Losing someone you love is one of life’s most challenging moments. In times like these, the Church walks with you, offering a place of peace, hope, and healing. This is a sacred time when we honour our departed, celebrate their lives and entrust them to God’s loving care.
When a Christian dies, the community gathers for a funeral. We say farewell to the person who has died. We praise and thank God for the gift of a life which has been returned to its creator. And we remember with joy and sadness what that person has meant to them.
There are three Catholic funeral rites:
The Vigil for the Deceased may be quite informal. This is when the family and friends of the person who has died pray in the presence of the body in the home, in a chapel at a funeral directors’ premises, or in the parish church on the night before the Funeral Liturgy. The vigil would include prayers and readings and an opportunity for a relative or friend of the deceased person to share some ‘words of remembrance’ about the person who has died.
The Funeral Liturgy is the central liturgical celebration. It is usually celebrated in the church, and may be a Mass with the final commendation, or a Liturgy of the Word followed by prayers and a final commendation. The funeral liturgy is held whenever is appropriate for family and friends to gather.
The Rite of Committal is the final act of care for person who has died. It may be held at the cemetery or in a crematorium chapel. This rite may also be used for burial at sea. The Rite of Committal (burial or cremation) usually follows the funeral liturgy.

Preparing for a Funeral
At the death of a Christian whose life of faith was begun in the waters of Baptism and strengthened at the eucharistic table, the Church intercedes on behalf of the deceased because of its confident belief that death is not the end nor does it break the bonds forged in life.
The Church also ministers to the sorrowing and consoles them in the funeral rites with the comforting word of God and the Sacrament of the Eucharist.
Christians celebrate the funeral rites with family and friends to offer worship, praise, and thanksgiving to God for the gift of a life which has now been returned to God, to commend the deceased to God’s mercy and seek strength in the proclamation of the Paschal Mystery.
The parish will help the family of the deceased to prepare the funeral and to arrange the liturgy. These decisions should not be made in advance with the funeral director. The parish is ready to assist in working out the form of the funeral rite, the music, whether the funeral liturgy will include a Mass, and so forth.
